Operators Increasingly Outsourcing Mobile Content
Delivery |
The outsourcing of content delivery propositions has become
big business in Europe according to new research from End2End.
The trend of operators choosing outsourced solutions as opposed
to in-house is on the increase and statistics show that End2End
has emerged as the market leader with a 23% market share.
End2End carried out a proprietary survey of 57 European mobile
operators across 18 countries in August 2005 and again in
January 2006. The results of the survey revealed that 45%
of mobile operators are now using outsourced solutions compared
with 35% in August 2005.
This statistic also means that 39% of all subscribers are
now receiving content on their mobile via an outsourced provider,
compared to 30% in August 2005.
Atte Miettinen, Chief Marketing Officer at End2End, commented:
"With growing complexity and competition in mobile content,
operators of all sizes are partnering with specialist companies
to benefit from their expertise, experience and economies
of scale to maximise revenues and profitability."

Mobile phone gambling set to expand in Asia
|
The mobile applications market has become more colourful with
each passing year.
So far, gaming applications have proved to be one of the most
popular, with the International Data Corp predicting that
the mobile gaming market in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding
Japan) will rise to US$3 billion ($5 billion) in 2009 from
US$868 million this year.
So, what's next after mobile gaming? Take a bet? Yes, you
guessed it: Mobile gambling.
Every one of us is, to a certain degree, a punter. So, what
better way of entertaining yourself on the go than to play
a game and perhaps win some money?

Why U.S. Subs Aren’t Using Mobile Data
|
Don't expect too many mobile users to embrace phone content
with the same enthusiasm with which they have adopted previous
digital media. Recent studies of usage patterns and attitudes
among the growing audience for mobile data suggest a lot of
frustration in the marketplace. Widespread concern about usability,
reliability and sheer application quality and value may be
retarding growth.
A new NOP survey of 1,000 adult users for Olista found that
64 percent of those who tried to use mobile data, from picture
messaging to ringtone or game downloading, said they would
give up trying if one or two attempts failed. Only 2 percent
of those buyers would even bother trying to contact customer
service about the problem. NOP reports that 77 percent of
mobile customers have not tried data services and, among those
who had, only 12 percent said they were "completely satisfied"
with the experience.

Mobile Gamers go Direct to Carriers for Content
|
While mobile games publishers ready offerings for direct-to-consumer
sales, data from M:Metrics finds most cellular platform gamers
rely on their carriers to notify them when new games are available
for download.
Top game publishers in the mobile market include Jamdat, with
a 14.4 percent market share and Mforma, which holds 10.8 percent
of the market. Additional publishers THQ, I-Play and Gameloft
each hold about nine percent share.
One issue faced by publishers of mobile content outside the
walled garden is compatibility. "It is imperative that the
publisher correctly identifies the handset, and not all games
will work on all handsets," M:Metrics senior analyst, Seamus
McAteer, told ClickZ Stats. " These issues stymie the ability
to promote - off deck.

Mobile data users give up when going gets tough
|
Users are more likely to give up than seek assistance when
they run into difficulties when using using mobile data applications,
a survey released Thursday says.
The survey, conducted by NOP on behalf of Olista, which provides
services for cellular operators, found that 64 percent of
respondents who actually tried to use mobile data services
said they'd give up trying after one or two attempts if they
ran into trouble. Only two percent said they would seek help
from the operator. About 25 percent said they'd continue trying
on their own.
The survey covered 1000 adults, according to a statement from
Olista. It covered simple data services such as downloading
games and ringtones and sending pictures.

Mobinet study: Mobile data growing, but content concerns
remain |
About 56% of users of multimedia mobile phones use their devices
to access the Internet or check e-mail at least once per month,
but a growing number of users also remain unimpressed with
their content choices, according to the most recent Mobinet
study from consulting firm A.T. Kearney and the Judge Business
School at Cambridge University.
The study, conducted eight times since 2000, surveyed 4000
mobile phone users is 21 countries. Among other results, the
study found that more than half of mobile phone handsets are
less than one year old and have robust multimedia capabilities
that are increasingly understood by their users. Nearly two-thirds
of users said new services and functions were easy to understand
and enjoyable to use. Even among older mobile phone users,
less than half complained that new functions were difficult
to use.

Wireless: Bets are down on gambling by phone
|
Governments across Asia are lifting restrictions on gambling,
and analysts forecast a huge increase in the number of new
casinos built in the region. But while builders are pouring
concrete, there is another frontier line opening up for gamblers
here: cellphones. "Wireless devices are now ubiquitous
and in Asia in particular, the percentage of advanced devices
and the gaming on these devices is very high," said Matti
Zinder, chief executive of Spin3, an Israel-based wireless
casino system provider. Its main competitors in the sector
include Virtue Fusion of Britain and another Israel-based
company, Zone4Play

Mobile Industry Adopts Ratings for Content
|
In what is a sure sign that the mobile entertainment industry
is quickly maturing, industry group CTIA has announced a two-tier
ratings system for content, despite the fact that most of
what's out there is not "adult." More mature entertainment
is definitely on the way, however, so it's a positive sign
that the industry is taking this precaution.
Nonprofit organization The Wireless Association (CTIA) announced
this week a voluntary content guideline system not unlike
the ESRB, in an effort to "proactively provide tools and controls
to manage wireless content offered by the carriers." The announcement
was made amid growing concern regarding the sophistication
and increasingly wide availability of mobile multimedia.
It has been widely accepted that the guidelines were drawn
up largely in an effort to avoid government regulation of
the industry, and indeed the FCC applauded the CTIA's efforts.
"This industry effort should really help families
who rely on their cellphones but do not want their children
inadvertently exposed to adult material," FCC Commissioner
Jonathan S. Adelstein said.

MOBILE CASINO GAMING WORKING WELL FOR SLOTLAND
|
Slotland Casino management is probably more than a little
happy with their newly launched mobile phone betting service,
which reportedly turned in almost $4 million wagered in a
day, exceeding expectations for the new gambling platform.
"We had a very good feeling about our new mobile games,"
said Slotland spokesperson Hannah Morante. "But when we had
nearly 4 million dollars in wagers on one of the very first
days, I tell you we were all just amazed at the instant popularity!"
Slotland’s mobile games provide slots fans with action any
time they have a minute for a quick break, anywhere that their
busy lives might take them in a day – in a queue, on the
train, at the water cooler.

Onboard gambling may lead to free flights on Ryanair
|
Passengers on Ryanair could one day fly for free if revenues
from onboard gambling and other services end the need for
it to charge fares, the chief executive of the airline has
predicted.
Michael O'Leary said Ryanair, the second biggest international
carrier in the world, gave away about a quarter of its seats
last year and that figure could rise to 50 or even 100 per
cent depending on how successful in-flight gaming proved.
The Dublin-based airline hopes to launch a gambling service
in the next 12 to 18 months, provided it can devise a payment
system that allows it to debit a passenger's credit card before
the plane lands.

Why users want to do it themselves |
When it comes to entertainment content, mobile users are starting
to make their own, rather than passively consuming. Dominic
Conlon of Stampster.co.uk asks why and examines how brands
can catch the DIY wave.
Where's the mobile entertainment market going? A simple question
to ask, but far from easy to answer – especially for mass-market
brands looking to target mobile users. Ringtones, wallpapers
and games have had phenomenal success, stoked further by the
arrival of ever-more sophisticated handsets.

Gambling by mobile phone is booming |
Gambling by mobile phone has rocketed, with the number of
betting pages downloaded expected to approach three million
this year, a rise of 367 per cent on 2004.
The conclusion of research by Mintel has sparked concern that
the almost unlimited access to gambling provided by mobile
phones will fuel a rise in addiction. Another potential problem
is children gambling by phone.
